Poker

Two different games

Casino poker (house-banked)

Casino Hold’em, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud and similar. You play against the dealer, the payouts are fixed, and there is a permanent house edge — typically 2% to 5% depending on the variant and how well you play it.

Correct strategy reduces that edge. It cannot eliminate it.

Player-versus-player poker

Cash games and tournaments where you play other people. The house takes a rake from each pot rather than betting against you, so a skilled player can win over time — by beating the other players by more than the rake costs.

That is a genuine skill game, and a demanding one. Most players do not clear the rake.

Side bets are where the edge hides

Casino poker variants almost always offer optional side bets — bonus payouts for strong starting hands, progressive jackpots for a royal flush, and similar. These are the most profitable part of the table for the operator, frequently carrying house edges above 5% and sometimes well into double figures.

The base game in Three Card Poker or Casino Hold’em is reasonable value by casino standards. The side bets beside it usually are not. Playing the main bet only is the single biggest improvement available at these tables.
