How a spin is actually decided

A random number generator produces the result the instant you press spin. The reels spinning on screen are an animation of a decision that has already been made. Stopping them early, changing your stake, or switching machines changes nothing about the outcome.

Each spin is also independent. The game holds no memory of the last two hundred results, which is why a slot is never “due”. Testing houses such as eCOGRA and GLI audit these generators for licensed operators — a game with no listed studio and no certification is one to skip.

Volatility and bankroll

Volatility describes the shape of the results, not the size of the house edge. Two slots with identical RTP can feel completely different to play.

A practical rule: on a high-volatility slot, plan for at least 200 spins at your chosen stake before you expect the game’s main feature to appear. If that total exceeds your session budget, lower the stake or pick a lower-volatility game.

Slot questions

Do bonus buy features offer better value?

Not usually. Buying the bonus round typically costs 50 to 100 times your stake, and the feature’s RTP is calibrated so the purchase carries a house edge similar to or slightly worse than normal play. What it does change is speed — you reach the volatile part of the game immediately, which compresses a long session’s swings into minutes.

Are progressive jackpot slots worth playing?

Progressives fund the jackpot by taking a slice of every bet, which lowers the base game’s RTP. You are trading a worse everyday return for a very small chance at a very large prize. That can be a reasonable trade if the jackpot is what you are there for — just know that is the trade you are making.

Can a casino change a slot’s RTP?

Some studios ship the same game in several RTP configurations, and the operator chooses which to run. This is legal and disclosed in the game’s info panel — which is exactly why it is worth opening that panel rather than assuming the figure quoted on a review site applies to the version you are playing.
